Rooster Rush in South Dakota

Rooster Rush is the South Dakota way to say "WELCOME" to out of state friends, family, first-timers, and long-time visitors as they Hunt the Greatest in SD!

Hunting is a long-standing tradition along the Missouri River in central South Dakota. And it’s no wonder when you consider the rolling river breaks, brush-filled draws, sprawling grasslands, and agricultural fields that characterize the area. This landscape provides prime habitat for a variety of game species.

Since 1919, the tradition of pheasant hunting has brought friends and family together. Every fall, opening weekend brings unprecedented enthusiasm, excitement, and activity to cities and rural communities across the state.

Central South Dakota holds Rooster Rush traditions and activities two weeks before the Traditional Pheasant Season starts and the first full week of opener season. Many communities have giveaway bags full of hunting materials and swag ready for you. When you arrive, check in with the local Chamber of Commerce to see what's happening for Rooster Rush in your location!
