Ingalls Homestead
Ingalls Homestead
The Ingalls Homestead is located on the quarter-section of land Laura Ingalls Wilder's family homesteaded in the 1880s. As author of the Little House books, Laura shared this experience with generations of readers; five of her nine books are set in the De Smet area.
We welcome visitors for day visits and camping. Visitors can explore exhibits, take a covered wagon ride across the prairie to a one-room schoolhouse session, watch demonstrations of hay twisting and wheat grinding from the book The Long Winter, make jump ropes and corncob dolls, wash clothes, and take a pony or pony cart ride.
Camping options include camping covered wagons, a bunkhouse, RV sites, and tent camping. Reservations are suggested, but walk-ins welcome based on availability.
